What Is Anodizing?

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that thickens and toughens the protective oxide layer on metal surfaces, typically aluminum. The electric current releases oxygen ions from the electrolyte and allows them to react with the metal atoms on the surface.

Anodizing is most performed on aluminum but can also be done on titanium and other metals. The result is the formation of a corrosion-resistant metal oxide film that is integrated with the metal substrate and therefore cannot chip or peel.

How It's Done

Anodizing is performed by immersing the metal in an acid electrolyte bath and applying an electrical current.

The coating thickness and surface characteristics are carefully controlled by the electrolyte composition, temperature, applied current density, and processing time to meet the end product requirements.

Benefits

The anodized metal has an improved lifespan and durability resulting in lower maintenance and operating costs. The oxide film that is produced through the anodizing process is highly stable and results in improved corrosion resistance.

The porosity of the oxide layer also allows the material to be easily sealed or dyed to change the aesthetics of the product.
