Dissolved metal

As an electropolishing bath is used metal is removed from the part being electropolished. Some of that metal precipitates and falls to the bottom of the tank and some of the metal dissolves into the electropolishing solution. When there is a high percentage of metal in the bath (generally >3.5% ) it becomes difficult to get good results, requiring higher voltages for the same current density and resulting in increased electrical costs, rack marks, and burning. The percentage of metal in an electropolishing bath can be determined by a laboratory by atomic absorption in your plant by titration. Depending on the size of the bath and usage metal analysis is done weekly to monthly.
